Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is a major shift in how self-employed individuals and landlords manage their tax affairs in the UK. This shift aims to modernise tax reporting, improve accuracy, and increase efficiency. While it may require an initial investment in software and adapting to new processes, MTD for Income Tax could streamline tax obligations in the long run.

Under Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, individuals must keep digital records of the amount, category, and date of income and expenses incurred.

To be mandated to MTD, the gross income — before expenses and tax are deducted — from self-employment or property is taken into consideration.

Your clients will be required to use MTD for income tax if:

  • From 6 April 2026, their gross income from these sources totals over £50,000
  • From 6 April 2027, their gross income from these sources totals over £30,000

We're one of the few software providers recognised by HMRC as part of their Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment testing phase. Contact us if you would like to participate in the MTD beta testing.

For more MTD resources visit our Making Tax Digital hub. Here you will find resources to help your clients through the process and provide thought leadership to help you stay up to date.
